Azarenka progresses to French Open round two

MINSK, 27 May (BelTA) – Belarus’ former world number one Victoria Azarenka, currently ranked 75 in the world, went off to a good start at the French Open with a solid, 6-0, 6-0, win over Belgium’s World No.1140 Yanina Wickmayer, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian will next face either world number 30 Sofia Kenin of the United States or France’s world number 72 Varvara Gracheva.

Earlier, Belarus’ world number one Aryna Sabalenka secured a 6-1, 6-0 win over Russia’s world number 86 Kamilla Rakhimova in the opener. Aryna Sabalenka will next play World No.97 Jil Teichmann of Switzerland.

For 2025, the overall prize pool sits at €56.3 million, with the winners in the men’s and women’s singles earning €2.55 million and 2,000 points. The previous women’s singles event was won by Iga Swiatek of Poland. Carlos Alcaraz of Spain was victorious in the men’s event.
