Azarenka outlasts Baptiste to reach round of 16 in Chicago

MINSK, 30 September (BelTA) – Belarus' world number 34 Victoria Azarenka came back from a break down in the third set to outlast world number 174 Hailey Baptiste of the United States, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, to secure her second win at the ongoing Chicago Fall Tennis Classic, BelTA has learned.

In the opener the Belarusian scored a 6-2, 6-1 victory over world number 49 Zhang Shuai of China in just 61 minutes.

Victoria Azarenka will next play world number 9 Garbine Muguruza of Spain.

Belarus' world number 106 Aliaksandra Sasnovich registered a victory against world number 48 Madison Keys of the United States in the opener. In the second round Aliaksandra Sasnovich lost to Kazakhstan's world number 17 Elena Rybakina, 4-6, 4-6. Elena Rybakina will face Russia's world number 31 Veronika Kudermetova for a spot in the quarterfinal.

In Nur-Sultan Belarus' world number 408 Vera Lapko lost to Kazakhstan's world number 47 Yulia Putintseva, 4-6, 4-6, in the round of Last 16. In the round of 32 Vera Lapko saw off Germany's world number 132 Jule Niemeier, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. In the doubles opener Vera Lapko and Belarus' Lidziya Marozava defeated Emily Webley Smith of the UK and India's Rutuja Bhosale, 6-2, 4-6, 10-1. The Belarusian duo will face Russian tandem Vitalia Diatchenko and Yana Sizikova in the semifinal.
