MINSK, 6 March (BelTA) – Indian Wells three-time winner Victoria Azarenka of Belarus reached the second round of the 2025 edition after defeating 18-year-old Clervie Ngounoue of the United States, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), BelTA has learned.
The Belarusian will next play Qinwen Zheng of China. Victoria Azarenka won the event in 2009, 2011, 2016.
Current world number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will launch her run from round two. She will face either McCartney Kessler of the United States or Anna Blinkova of Russia. In 2023 Aryna Sabalenka reached the Indian Wells final where she lost to Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina.
The previous edition was won by Iga Swiatek of Poland. This year’s tournament will be over on 16 March. The winner will earn $1.2 million and 1,000 points.
