MINSK, 28 November (BelTA) – External forces are trying to undermine the brotherhood and break historical ties between the peoples of Belarus and Russia, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said as she addressed a plenary session of the 10th Belarusian Christmas Readings by video link, BelTA has learned.
"As before, the unity of our peoples is being tested. External forces are trying to weaken this brotherhood, to break historical ties," Maria Zakharova noted. "If we remain united, they cannot destroy us, so they are breaking us one by one. Those who did not remember this wisdom were defeated, as we can see. This is why we need to stand together."
Maria Zakharova noted that the West sees Russia and Belarus as a truly united whole. "By the way, they do not distinguish between us as they try to cancel us and criticize us. If they are not succeeding in dividing us, then can we afford the split ourselves?" she asked.
She is confident that separation would not only be a move backward, but also a loss of the spiritual pillar that made nations strong in the most difficult times. "Only united we can defend our common heritage, our faith, our freedom," she noted.
"Such events as the Christmas Readings help us to preserve the connection of generations, strengthen the spiritual and cultural unity of our peoples," the spokeswoman said. "Diplomats say 'let's compare notes'. Let us compare our proper approaches, true postulates, look to each other and say that we are moving in the right direction."
The Christmas Readings is the most important scientific event organized by the Belarusian Orthodox Church together with the state. The event discusses a wide range of matters.
