MOSCOW, 2 October (BelTA) – Interaction between Belarus and Russia in countering history falsification is exemplary, official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Maria Zakharova said at a briefing for the press in Moscow on 2 October, BelTA learned.
"Unlike many countries that have initiated the rewriting of history or have become victims of such influence and pressure, Belarus has always been distinguished by its careful attitude to our common history and spiritual and cultural traditions. Our fraternal peoples are linked by numerous family and friendly ties, the memory of heroic ancestors, common past and future. We are close allies and strategic partners. We have a common Union State. We are progressively developing trade, economic and humanitarian ties," Maria Zakharova said.
She recalled that on the instructions of the presidents of Belarus and Russia, historians of the two countries have been actively cooperating in recent years on the matters of common historical memory, countering history falsification, and genocide of the Soviet people during the Great Patriotic War. "At the end of January, a joint Belarusian-Russian commission on history was established under the auspices of the presidents' administrations of our countries. It should coordinate common efforts to protect the historical truth, including in educational literature," the diplomat noted.
According to her, as a result of these efforts, a number of textbooks for students on the history of the Great Patriotic War and the history of the Union State have already been prepared. "We jointly implement war memorial initiatives. As you know, earlier this year the presidents of Belarus and Russia together inaguarated a new memorial to commemorate Soviet civilian victims of the Nazi genocide during the Great Patriotic War in Gatchina," Maria Zakharova stated.
She also lauded the work carried out by the Standing Committee of the Union State on this track. "A Dmitry Mezentsev [State Secretary of the Union State] plays a great role in these efforts. Last year alone he spearheaded many events, books, literature and projects, which is the largest contribution to the preservation of our common historical memory." In this regard, she mentioned the restoration and museumification of the Brest Hero Fortress memorial, the Kursk Bulge memorial project.
"Together with the Belarusians, we will continue to step up efforts on the historical track. We are open to dialogue with all constructive partners. It is just that with Belarus we enjoy this exemplary interaction. We will be happy if colleagues from other countries join the historians of the Union State," Maria Zakharova stressed.
