BREST, 6 January (BelTA) – The Brest Hero Fortress memorial complex has launched an exhibition of Yevgeny Khaldei's wartime photographs " dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, Yelena Mityukova, the head of the scientific and exhibition department of the memorial complex, told BelTA.
Titled as The Banner of Victory, the exhibition is running in one of the halls of the exhibition project "Museum of War - The Territory of Peace." It has been prepared by the State Museum and Exhibition Center ROSPHOTO with the support of the Russian Ministry of Culture as part of the national Kultura project. “It was our initiative with which we approached ROSPHOTO. We have never had such projects before. Last year, the photo exhibition was shown in many Russian cities and in the Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War. We wanted to show it in the Brest fortress," Yelena Mityukova said.
The author of the famous photo "Raising a Flag Over the Reichstag," Yevgeny Khaldei is considered one of the most famous Soviet war photographers. The exhibition features 50 images. Each of them has its own story. For example, "Seven go on a recce" from which only three returned. Or a photograph from the Ruins of Sevastopol series which was used as evidence of the Nazi crimes at the Nuremberg Trials.
Yevgeny Khaldei's photographs are not so much a wartime evidence as an emotional experience. Heroism and courage of an ordinary person, the joy of victories and the pain of defeats, the loss of loved ones – the TASS war photojournalist experienced all this himself. His works are imbued with pain for the country and a passionate desire to live to witness the Victory.
The photo exhibition "The Banner of Victory" in the Brest Fortress is slated to run until 25 February (possibly longer).
