World Climate Summit 2024 kicks off in Baku

BAKU, 11 November (BelTA-AZERTAC) – The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which is considered to be one the world’s largest and most prestigious events, is kicking off in Baku, Azerbaijan.

COP29 will take place at Baku Stadium on 11-22 November. The World Leaders Climate Action Summit at COP 29 will be held on 12-13 November.

The main expectations from COP29 are to agree on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on Climate Finance.

There are 14 initiatives launched by the COR29 Presidency that links climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals, including green energy corridors, green energy storage, harmony for climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction in organic waste, action on green digital technologies and other topics. The establishment of a Climate Finance Action Fund is envisaged as one of the initiatives.

Azerbaijan attaches special importance to the issues of environmental protection and elimination of the consequences of climate change and carries out important work in this direction. Demonstrating exemplary leadership in such an important global issue as combating climate change, Azerbaijan has made a motto: “In Solidarity for a Green World!”. As President Ilham Aliyev emphasized, the country will make every effort during COP29 to create a bridge between developed and developing countries, achieve consensus and turn COP29 into a success story.

The year 2024 has been declared the Year of Solidarity for a Green World” in the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The UN Climate Change Conference, or the Climate Summit, has been held annually since 1995 and brings together the countries that are parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The previous summit was held at the end of last year in Dubai, the UAE with the participation of delegations from more than 150 countries.
