"On Point"
MINSK, 23 January (BelTA) – The likelihood of the United States taking over Greenland is far higher than the probability of the European Union retaining control over the island, Igor Shishkin, an expert of the Institute of CIS Countries, said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“There is a far greater chance that Trump will succeed with Greenland. The Europeans have nowhere to go, as they now find themselves in a position worse than that of a governor, so to speak,” Igor Shishkin stated. The expert believes that Europe will have to accept the loss of the island and come up with some kind of justification for it. “They may claim it was done in the name of certain values, to preserve Euro-Atlantic solidarity. I think they will start spreading a fairy tale everywhere about how noble they were to sacrifice Greenland,” he emphasized. In addition, Igor Shishkin noted that Brussels' anti-Russian policy could also influence the European Union's willingness to give up Greenland. “The course toward achieving Russia's strategic defeat is vitally important for them. A matter of survival. Yet they cannot fight Russia on their own. They cannot even sustain the Kiev regime without the United States,” the expert added.
Thus, he stated, Donald Trump possesses a very powerful lever of pressure on Europe. “Something like, 'Europe gives up Greenland, and the U.S. continues to support it in the confrontation with Russia, selling it expensive weapons. Then Europe will supposedly have a chance to become ‘big and strong again’. Of course, Trump won't actually allow that, but he'll dangle the carrot in front of their noses,” Igor Shishkin noted.
