Why Putin skipped G8 summit, off to Minsk in 2012

MINSK, 27 December (BelTA) – The latest episode of the documentary series Time Chose Us aired by the Belarus 1 TV channel looked back at why Russian President Vladimir Putin refused to participate in the G8 summit and went on a visit to Minsk in 2012, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Putin became Russia's president following the 2012 presidential election. A few months later, the Russian leader started to visit foreign countries. Experts tried to find symbolism and to guess foreign policy priorities in these visits. Vladimir Putin’s first foreign visit featured Minsk, Berlin and Paris.

The Russian president refused to participate in the G8 summit in the United States and went to the Belarusian capital. "He rebuffed the West," analysts said then. It was also a clear signal: Eurasian integration is a priority, and Belarus is one of the main elements in this project.

Vladimir Putin's visit to Minsk was not only a sign of enhancing cooperation within the Union State of Belarus and Russia, but also the beginning of a new stage of Belarusian-Russian relations. The presidents reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the ‘union’ friendship.

"Belarus is not just our close and special partner. Belarus is certainly our closest relative. Not only because of our cultural, ethnic and historical roots. It is also about the current state of our relations," Vladimir Putin emphasized.

"This visit is more important than many economic agreements between Belarus and Russia, and those with other states. It is a signal that we have a bright future. As for Belarus, we will be happy to pass this way," the Belarusian leader assured.
