Why European countries ignore Belarus’ requests to provide information about Nazis?

MINSK, 3 May (BelTA0 - European countries ignore Belarus’ requests to provide information about Nazi collaborators who continued to live in these countries after the war, Sergei Shikunets, deputy head of the department for supervision of investigation of especially important criminal cases of the Prosecutor General's Office, said in a new episode of BelTA’s project The Nation Speaks.

During the discussion Lieutenant Colonel Denis Bilman, commander of the Commandant's Battalion of the Minsk Military Commandant's Office, expressed the opinion that Europe, particularly Germany, has started to forget what Nazism was. Sergei Shikunets disagreed noting that based on the results of the investigation of the genocide of the Belarusian people during the World War II he came to the conclusion that they all remember everything.

“It's just that many representatives of the modern elites of a number of foreign countries continue to defend their fathers and grandfathers. The time will come and we will reveal their names; we have this information. How do you think the Nazi criminals who got away raised their children? They raised them to hate everything Soviet, Russian. Why are we talking about revanchism? Those generations lived in expectation of revanchism. It was realized, unfortunately, by the collective West on the territory of Ukraine where nationalism got off the charts. They all remember it very well,” Sergei Shikunets said.

European countries have not responded to requests for legal assistance. The Belarusian Prosecutor's Office has sent requests for information about this or that person, who was a Nazi collaborator but was safely residing in the territory of this or that state, Sergei Shikunets said. “To answer means, in fact, to recognize the fact that such a person resided in our territory and has never been charged. Sometimes they answer but their answers are very politicized: they say that our request threatens the national security of our country. This is a fact. We did receive such an answer from one of the European countries,” he said.
