Western sanctions against Belarus criticized for violating right to development, freedom of movement

MINSK, 4 April (BelTA) – Illegal Western sanctions against Belarus violate the right to development, freedom of movement and block access of the most vulnerable people to medications of critical importance. Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Office and other international organizations in Geneva Larisa Belskaya made the statement at the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council, BelTA has learned.

Larisa Belskaya said: “Prohibitions against trade, transport shipments, financial transactions, the issuance of visas, and cultural cooperation paint the picture of a new iron curtain. Western sanctions are a threat to food security and the realization of the right to food for the population of many Global South countries.”

The diplomat went on saying: “The evaluations the resolution on Belarus is based on are false and biased. The suggested measures are not designed to take care of human rights but to destroy principles of international cooperation and secure political priorities of Western countries.”

The permanent representative stressed that Belarus will not bow to illegal demands of the West in the shape of the UN Human Rights Council resolution. “Depoliticization and the lack of discrimination in the work of the council are the key to solving many problems. First of all, the problem of acute political confrontation, a crisis of trust, and extreme politicization of the work on country-specific plots,” she opined.
