Warsaw District Court issues European Arrest Warrant for Tomasz Szmydt

MINSK, 10 June (BelTA) - The District Court in Warsaw has issued a European Arrest Warrant for Tomasz Szmydt, Onet reports.The Polish dissident, former judge Tomasz Szmydt had left for Belarus because of disagreement with the Polish policies.

"The District Court in Warsaw, at the request of the prosecutor, issued a European Arrest Warrant for Tomasz Szmydt, suspected of espionage," the Polish National Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

Earlier the court in Warsaw granted the request for pre-trial three-month detention for Tomasz Szmydt on 15 May. After that, the Polish Prosecutor's Office issued an arrest warrant and put him on the wanted list.

In early May, Polish dissident, former judge Tomasz Szmydt signed a letter of resignation while in Minsk and asked the Belarusian authorities for protection. The reason, according to him, was the disagreement with the policy of the Polish authorities and the actions by Polish politicians. Tomasz Szmydt was forced to leave Poland because of persecution and threats.
