WANO begins peer review at BelNPP

MINSK, 12 March (BelTA) – A team of experts from the Moscow Center of the World Association of Nuclear Operators conducted preliminary events on 10-11 March and began a scheduled partner inspection at the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP) on 12 March, BelTA learned from the BelNPP.

The inspection started with an introductory meeting to discuss the goals and objectives of the forthcoming inspection with the management of the nuclear power plant and the heads of the company's structural divisions.

First Deputy Director General - Chief Engineer of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant Anatoly Bondar expressed hope that the partner inspection would be held in an atmosphere of mutual understanding, openness and cooperation. “I think that during these two weeks we will be able to demonstrate to the WANO team of experts our ability to ensure a high level of safety and reliability in the operation of the BelNPP power units. All suggestions and recommendations of the team will be positively received and taken into account in future NPP operation,” he said.

Dmitry Zerkal, head of the team of experts, said that the goal of the peer reviews is to maximize the safety and reliability of NPPs worldwide by making joint efforts to assess, compare with the best achievements and improve operation through mutual support, exchange of information and use of positive experience.

The team of experts was provided with information on the main indicators and current operational condition of Units 1 and 2 of the BelNPP. After that the experts, accompanied by managers and employees of the BelNPP, toured the buildings and facilities as part of the inspection program.

The WANO scheduled inspection will be running through 27 March. The team of experts comprises specialists from Bulgaria, Iran, China and Russia.
