Vyacheslav Kebich, Belarus' first premier, dies at 84

MINSK, 9 December (BelTA) – Belarus' first prime minister Vyacheslav Kebich has died, the Council of Ministers confirmed this information to a BelTA correspondent.

Vyacheslav Kebich was born in the village of Konyushevshchina, Volozhin District, Minsk Oblast on 10 June 1936. He graduated from Belarusian State Polytechnic Institute (now Belarusian National Technical University). In 1973 he was appointed director and in 1978 director general of Minsk Machine-Tool Plant named after Kirov. In 1980-1985 he was a Communist Party functionary. In 1985-1990 he was Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Chairman of the State Planning Committee of the BSSR. In 1990-1994 he was Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Belarus. In 1992 he was awarded the State Prize of Belarus.
