MOSCOW, 29 May (BelTA) – The West uses sanctions as a tool to blackmail partner countries of Belarus and Russia, State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus Aleksandr Volfovich said at a multilateral meeting of secretaries of the security councils of the CIS states that was held within the framework of the International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues running in Moscow on 27-29 May, BelTA has learned.

“Geopolitical tensions keep growing in the world; a complex process of complete transformation of international relations is unfolding before our eyes and with our participation. A multi-polar world is becoming a real alternative to the shaken global dominance of the collective West. In these conditions, continuous strengthening of security mechanisms and increasing of the role of the CIS in the international arena, its participation in shaping a new fair world order remain the consolidating factors in the development of the Commonwealth of Independent States,” Aleksandr Volfovich said.

He remarked that the external destructive pressure on the Commonwealth countries is not weakening. “In a bid to maintain the status of a key international player, Westerners pull out all the stops trying to hamper interstate integration associations in the post-Soviet space. This is also the reason for the growing pressure on the Commonwealth countries as the West seeks to challenge their economic partnerships and weaken integration ties in the CIS. The West has weaponized sanctions to blackmail partner countries of Moscow and Minsk,” the state secretary of the Security Council remarked.

Aleksandr Volfovich noted that the confrontation at the level of values and ideology is becoming permanent: the history of the 20th century is currently being revisited. “Eighty years after the Great Victory, the issue of historical memory has arisen as sharply as never before. The central element of the West's strategy is to reshape the mindset of our society, especially the youth. One of the key tasks for the CIS states today is to prevent the distortion and falsification of history. It is necessary to step up the awareness raising efforts and ideological work in the Commonwealth, improve its legal framework in order to prevent resurgence of the ideology of neo-Nazism, extremism, discrimination on ethnic, racial and religious grounds and other inhumane acts. In general,  today's developments prompt us to build closer relations between the CIS states in all areas - from politics, security to economy and humanitarian matters,” the state secretary of the Security Council remarked.

“We believe that our joint efforts will be successful if we have a shared view of the current developments and demonstrate shared approaches, if we support each other in the international arena and strengthen our alliances and partnerships,” Aleksandr Volfovich emphasized.
