Volfovich reveals president’s demands for Armed Forces inspection

MINSK, 18 February (BelTA) – During the snap inspection of the Armed Forces, the president of Belarus has tasked the State Secretariat of the Security Council with being demanding and maximally objective in assessing the military units under review, State Secretary of the Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich told the media following his report to the head of state on 18 February, BelTA has learned.

“The president sets the following tasks for the officials of the State Secretariat of the Security Council: at the forefront [of the Armed Forces inspection] must be surprise, demandingness, and maximum objectivity in assessing the military units being inspected. The head of state said that a real picture is needed of the capability and readiness of our Armed Forces to act in accordance with their intended purpose,” Aleksandr Volfovich said.

Regarding the specifics of the second stage of the snap combat readiness inspection, the state secretary of the Security Council emphasized that the majority of permanent readiness military units were checked in virtually all branches of the Armed Forces, including the special operations forces, which were simultaneously carrying out tasks in various regions of the country.

According to him, the State Secretariat created a complex environment simulating real combat conditions: “Of course, we drew on the experience of the special military operation. The inspected military units were engaged by a simulated enemy, for which we deployed Internal Troops units.”

Aleksandr Volfovich emphasized that the head of state was informed that the Internal Troops units demonstrated a high level of personnel training. The soldiers' motivation and professional skills were noted. "This caused particular difficulties for the units being inspected, as it was no easy task to counter the simulated enemy. But it won’t be any easier in real conditions. You cannot underestimate your opponent,” he said.

The state secretary of the Security Council recalled that the president personally checked the combat readiness of the Armed Forces by visiting the 227th Combined Arms Training Ground in Borisov District. Among other matters, Aleksandr Lukashenko was interested in how well personnel could use their weapons – rifles, machine guns, grenade launchers – as well as perform exercises using the weapons of combat vehicles. “Some did better, some did worse. But one thing stands out: servicemen who have served for a year or a year and a half showed much higher results than those servicemen we drafted in the autumn,” Aleksandr Volfovich said.

As BelTA reported earlier, a large-scale inspection of the Armed Forces, ordered by the president of Belarus, began on 16 January. The primary goal is to see an objective picture, the real state of the troops, and assess the actions of military personnel. This is precisely why the measures are being carried out suddenly. A key feature of the inspection is its organization. The head of state is putting military units into combat readiness, bypassing the Defense Ministry and the General Staff.

The president signs a directive classified as “secret”, which outlines the concept of the upcoming inspection. State Secretary of the Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich receives a sealed package containing the document, after which he proceeds to the military unit designated by the head of state. On the instructions of the Belarusian leader, Chairman of the State Control Committee Vasily Gerasimov was also brought in to conduct the inspection.

Aleksandr Lukashenko keeps the progress of the inspection under his personal control and regularly receives reports from the state secretary of the Security Council.
