MINSK, 24 March (BelTA) – The situation unfolding in Serbia is reminiscent of the attempt at a color revolution in Belarus in 2020, when the youth was whipped up to take to the streets, State Secretary of the Belarusian Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich said on the air of the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

Commenting on the situation in Serbia, Aleksandr Volfovich noted that there are attempts to drag the youth into a coup d'etat in this small European state surrounded by unfriendly nations. “Serbia already went through the war back in the day, it plunged into this abyss. The people of Serbia experienced the horrors of the war in the late 1990s. And today again in the center of the Balkan Peninsula, at the instigation of the collective West, they are trying to fan the flames of, I would say, another color revolution. But we understand perfectly well what color revolutions lead to. Not a single color revolution has ever brought calm, peace and prosperity to any country. And the president of Serbia and the leadership of Serbia say that there are attempts to enact the scenario of Ukraine's 2014 Maidan. The same kind of color revolution, only using the youth as a driving force. The locomotive of the protest in Serbia today is the young generation who probably does not fully understand what it is doing, what it is advocating for. They do not really put forward any political demands. They demand the overthrow of the government, they demand a new government. They themselves do not realize what this will lead to. Neither did many in Belarus who took to the streets in 2020 - they could not even articulate what they wanted, what they did not like. They just jumped on the bandwagon,” he said comparing the events in the two countries.

Aleksandr Volfovich noted that it would benefit Serbia to have a strong strategic partner. “It is difficult today for a small sovereign state to withstand these challenges and threats alone, especially when this state does not have any significant resources, but is determined to hold its ground. Again, it is hard for a nation to withstand this kind of geopolitical challenges and threats on its own. I believe that if Serbia were in alliance, for example, with the Russian Federation, and had the Russian Federation as its strategic partner, probably no one would even dare to go against it. Therefore, such alliances are crucial for maintaining peace, tranquility and security in a country. Belarus has always adhered to a multi-vector policy. We treat all states with respect, and we also want our interests and our sovereignty to be respected. The conclusion of such treaties, the creation of such unions as the Union State of Belarus and Russia, are aimed primarily at protecting the national interests of our country, our people,” the state secretary of the Security Council concluded.
