Volfovich: Foundation of Great Victory was laid during Brest Fortress defense

MINSK, 22 June (BelTA) – The foundation of the Great Victory was laid in the first days of the war during the defense of the Brest Fortress, in the battles for Grodno, Baranovichi, Borisov, Minsk and other cities, State Secretary of the Security Council of Belarus Aleksandr Volfovich told reporters on 22 June, BelTA has learned.

A reminder, the leadership of the State Secretariat of the Security Council and heads of uniformed agencies took part in a ceremony to lay flowers and wreaths at the Victory Monument in Minsk.

“Today, Belarusians in many corners of our country, including Minsk, bow their heads to the memory of their ancestors, grandparents and great-grandparents, who did the impossible to win the war, so that today’s generation could live under a peaceful blue sky,” said Aleksandr Volfovich.

The state secretary of the Security Council noted that many Europeans do not understand that the Victory against the brown plague of fascism was being won on the territory of the Soviet Union where decisive battles for the very existence of Europe were fought. “Back then, in the first days of the war, the foundation of the Great Victory was laid. It was laid during the defense of the Brest Fortress, in the battles for Grodno, Baranovichi, Borisov, Minsk and other cities. It was in these battles that the bricks in the foundation of the Great Victory of 1945 were laid at a huge human cost,” he noted.

Aleksandr Volfovich emphasized that these  heroic pages of our history are simply impossible to forget: “The current generation needs to be educated about this, so that children and youth appreciate this blue sky, the bright sun, this peaceful life. Many take this for granted. But  it requires a huge amount of work. Our state, including the president, the government, the security bloc, invests a lot of effort in ensuring security, neutralizing challenges and threats that could lead to a destructive war.”

Peace and security are safeguarded by the Armed Forces, other troops and military formations that demonstrate their skills and prowess in combat training. “In this way, they cool down hotheads in the West who are trying to provoke another conflict. A conflict that will engulf the whole of Europe,” Aleksandr Volfovich remarked.

At the same time, the state secretary of the Security Council noted that Belarusians remember history lessons and are proud of their grandparents and great-grandparents who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. “The ancestors of many Belarusians fought during the Great Patriotic War. Two of my grandfathers fought. One, after whom I was named, Aleksandr Grigorievich Volfovich, fought in the war from 1941 to 1945 as a political officer in an infantry company. He was seriously injured three times, received three military orders and medals. My other grandfather was a pilot, he served from 1943 to 1945. And they also contributed to the common cause of Victory,” Aleksandr Volfovich added.
