MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) – Belarus’ Armed Forces are capable of counteracting modern risks and challenges, State Secretary of the Belarusian Security Council Aleksandr Volfovich said in an interview with the SB. Belarus Segodnya newspaper, BelTA has learned.

“Peace and calm in our country are not a given. It is the result of painstaking work, which has been actively carried out since the proclamation of independence and sovereignty of Belarus,” Aleksandr Volfovich said.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the country needed to build its own national security system. “This had to be done under massive pressure from abroad. Already then, in the early 1990s, the country faced the comprehensive and, most dangerously, thoughtless demilitarization which was done at the behest of Western handlers. The army was reduced, disbanded, and in fact purposefully destroyed. Modern expensive high-class hardware was cut up for scrap,” the security secretary noted. “Anti-Belarusian activities were carried out with the active support of all kinds of foundations, which served only as a cover for the subversive work of Western special services. The goal was to denigrate the army, discredit the law enforcement agencies and all the people in uniform, who stood guard over the interests of the state. This naturally led to a decrease in public confidence in the military and law enforcement agencies and weakened its personnel potential.

“Undoubtedly, the most important starting point on the way to creating a national security system was the introduction of the institution of the presidency. It was this moment in our history that became a turning point. A kind of ‘moment of truth’. One of the first decrees by the head of state (signed on 5 August 1994) was to set up the Security Council of the Republic of Belarus, which was tasked with developing a mechanism for protecting the country from external and internal threats. As a result, the country has created a powerful system for ensuring national security. Its basis is the compact, well-equipped Armed Forces capable of counteracting modern risks and challenges,” Aleksandr Volfovich added.
