Victory Day celebrations in Minsk: generations' march, motor rally, concert

MINSK, 4 May (BelTA) – All residents and visitors of the Belarusian capital Minsk will have an opportunity to take part in the Victory Day celebrations, head of the main department for ideological work and youth affairs of the Minsk City Hall Olga Chemodanova told the media on 4 May, BelTA has learned.

“The Minsk City Hall has initiated a patriotic campaign 30 Days to Victory, which is underway throughout the city. All interested services, government bodies and enterprises are taking part in flower ceremonies at memorial sites, dialogue platforms, and meetings with veterans. 6 May will start with a motor rally through the memorable and iconic places of all the districts of the Belarusian capital and will end up with Victory Day commemorative meetings with the participation of personnel of various enterprises, youth, and public associations. I invite all residents of the Belarusian capital to take part in these events and to pay tribute to the memory and respect for the people who defended our homeland during the Great Patriotic War,” said Olga Chemodanova.

A solemn meeting and a concert will take place in the Palace of the Republic on 6 May. The start is at 17:00 local time.

A ceremony to honor state symbols will be held on National Flag Square on 8 May. “It is an annual holiday that we celebrate every second Sunday in May. This particular holiday was the result of the national referendum held on 14 May 1995, when our citizens chose the current flag, coat of arms and anthem. We invite everyone without exception to attend this event,” Olga Chemodanova stressed.

A march of the generations will take place as part of the national campaign Belarus Remembers on 9 May. The column of participants will march to the Victory Monument to lay wreaths. “I should note that war veterans will not take part in the procession for the first time, but they will be present near the Victory Monument. The column will be led by young patriotic generation from among the representatives of students, military-patriotic classes, clubs and colleges,” said Olga Chemodanova.

The celebrations on 9 May will wrap up with a concert on Victory Square at 21:30 and the fireworks at 23:00.
