Unverified information in mass media reports about Breivik’s visit to Belarus

MINSK, 2 March (BelTA) – Several mass media including the website gazeta.ru and the television company NTV have used unverified reports of Norwegian terrorist Anders Breivik’s visit to Belarus, Alexander Antonovich, Head of the Information and Public Relations Center of the State Security Committee of Belarus (KGB), told media on 2 March.

Alexander Antonovich explained Norwegian law enforcement agencies had requested the Belarusian side to interview citizen Mikhail Vasilyevich Reshetnikov, who had distributed information about Anders Breivik’s visit to Belarus. The State Security Committee has not managed to interview Mikhail Reshetnikov because he has been outside the country since 2007. Moreover, an international warrant to arrest Mikhail Reshetnikov was issued on 28 September 2010 for pocketing a hefty sum owned by a company. The KGB believes Mikhail Reshetnikov had deliberately distributed false information about Belarus in a bid to make himself look like a political refugee and acquire foreign citizenship faster. It is this information that the abovementioned mass media have used.

The official added that the Norwegian side had requested other information regarding Anders Breivik’s visit to Belarus. The KGB has found out that the “Norwegian shooter” arrived at the national airport Minsk, Belarus on 4 March 2005 on board of OS-687 flight from Vienna. His stay in Belarus was short and he left the country on board of LOT-706 flight on 11 March 2005. It was Anders Breivik’s only visit to Belarus.

While in Minsk Anders Breivik contacted citizen Nadezhda Sergeyevna Rutkovskaya, who has been outside Belarus since February 2009.

Norwegian national Anders Behring Breivik committed a double terrorist attack in Norway on 22 July 2011. The first one was an explosion near the office of the prime minister in Oslo and a mass shooting at the youth camp of Norway’s ruling Labor Party on the island of Utoya. His actions killed 77 and injured 150 people. He surrendered without resistance. In his words, he committed the terrorist attacks to save Norway and Europe from Muslims and multiculturalism. In late November 2011 he was recognized mentally incompetent and diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Yet he will face the trial in April 2012.
