Union State security guarantees treaty hailed as quintessence of Belarus-Russia cooperation

MINSK, 6 March (BelTA) – The treaty on security guarantees within the Union State between Russia and Belarus is the quintessence of military and interstate cooperation between the two countries, Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, First Deputy Defense Minister of Belarus Pavel Muraveiko told reporters as he visited the 230th combined-arms military exercise area that is hosting a command and staff exercise, BelTA learned.

“Military cooperation between our countries is at its peak. For many years, we have been working hard within the Union State to maintain and build up security. We created a regional military task force, established when and how it can be used, and much more. The treaty on security guarantees is a quintessence of our military cooperation and, in general, interstate cooperation between the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation within the Union State,” said Pavel Muraveiko.

He recalled that Belarus had adopted an updated National Security Concept and a new Military Doctrine. Russia has also adopted a new Military Doctrine and clarified its nuclear doctrine. “The treaty on security guarantees brings together all the provisions set out in national regulations and formalizes military security guarantees for our countries. The document is unique. It contains three main points. Firstly, the treaty means that the friendship between Belarus and Russia is not meant against anyone. We are strengthening our defense and security. This treaty is not directed against anyone. Just as our Military Doctrine stipulates that we do not consider any state as an enemy or opponent. Therefore, this treaty reaffirms our mutual commitments and our common understanding of military and political processes. Secondly, the treaty clearly states that we will respond to challenges like sanctions, economic pressure, attempts to hurt us and block certain initiatives,” Pavel Muraveiko noted.

A threat to one of the states is perceived as a threat against the entire Union State. “The consultation mechanisms are immediately activated. It is clearly stated that all possible assistance will be provided, including military assistance,” he emphasized. Pavel Muraveiko also pointed out that this document explains why nuclear weapons were deployed on the territory of Belarus. "They are deployed on our territory and will be used to defend the Republic of Belarus and the Union State. The procedure for its use is jointly determined by the heads of state to ensure mutual interests and mutual security,” he noted.

On 5 March, a number of units manned by people called up from the reserve are taking part in a command and staff exercise with live firing. For these military units, this is the final stage of the combat readiness test.
