MINSK, 2 September (BelTA) - The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) expressed thanks to Belarus for the opportunity to provide humanitarian aid to migrants, BelTA learned from the comments of UNHCR representative in Belarus Mamo Mulusew.
“UNHCR together with the Belarusian Red Cross Society and with the support of the State Border Committee of Belarus paid a second visit over the past week to the site on the Belarusian-Polish border in Grodno Oblast, where a group of 32 Afghanistan nationals, including men, women and children have been staying for more than three weeks. UNHCR is grateful for the opportunity to deliver humanitarian aid to people to meet their most basic needs,” the statement reads.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is closely monitoring the situation and is in contact with the relevant state authorities of Belarus. “The difficulties caused by this situation are obvious, but an immediate solution is also needed. The UNHCR calls on all parties involved, including the members of this group at the border themselves, to work together to help resolve the situation in accordance with international refugee law and humanitarian principles. The UNHCR stands ready to provide additional support to the authorities on both sides of the border, but encourages them to continue dialogue aimed at finding real solutions for those men, women and children who are now at the border, according to their situation,” said Mamo Mulusew.
