Train of Memory makes a stop in Zhlobin

ZHLOBIN, 26 June (BelTA) – The Train of Memory made a stop in Zhlobin, BelTA learned.

Oleg Artemkov from Gomel noted that it was a special honor for him to become part of the project. He admitted that once he first heard about the Train of Memory, he was very inspired and dreamed of joining. “My dream came true. Here I am. Standing among the Train of Memory participants today,” the young man said proudly.

According to Oleg Artemkov Oleg, his great-grandfather Anton Krivitsky was a soldier of the Red Army, was awarded medals For Courage and For Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. “Our family cherishes the memory of him. I try to find more information about my great-grandfather because a lot of information about him was lost. I'm trying to piece it all together. For me, knowing the history of the Great Patriotic War is an important thing. Nations who do not know their history have no future. The Train of Memory brought us together to carry on this history. Together we carry it to future generations. Together we are a force,” Oleg Artemkov believes.

Daria Chugunova from Rogachev also came to support the project participants. She was a passenger of the Train of Memory in 2023. “Two years have passed, but I recall this wonderful project over and over again. I follow the events of the Train of Memory every year. I keep in touch with guys from other countries, with whom we visited the Brest Fortress, Volgograd, Tula and many other cities of the route.”

She said that after the project she realized even more how important it is to protect the historical truth about the events of the Great Patriotic War. “This is also the duty of the younger generation. Some countries are trying to rewrite history. And for us, it's not just the history. This is the memory of our ancestors, this is the thread connecting our generations,” Daria is convinced.

Chairman of the Zhlobin District Executive Committee Sergei Yarets warmly welcomed the project participants and noted that the Train of Memory stopped in Zhlobin on a significant day for the whole district - the day of the liberation of the city from the Nazi invaders.

Senator of the Russian Federation from Arkhangelsk Oblast, member of the Federation Council Committee on Social Policy Ivan Novikov quoted the lines from the famous poem by Alexander Tvardovsky:“River crossing, river crossing! Left bank, right bank, rough snow, ice edge… Some get memories, some get glory, some get dark water and no trace left of them.”

“The last line is devoted to the huge number of our ancestors who still lie in unmarked graves throughout the vast territory of the former Soviet Union. Fascism had the most terrible grimaces, which must be remembered,” Ivan Novikov said as he addressed the young participants of the project.

The Train of Memory project, initiated by the speakers of the upper houses of the parliaments of Belarus and Russia, made its debut in 2022. In 2024, the project visited 13 cities and covered more than 9,000km.
