Thousands of students celebrate graduation in Minsk

MINSK, 20 June (BelTA) - The festival honoring university graduates titled as The Best Graduation kicked off at the site near the Palace of Sports in Minsk on 20 June, BelTA learned.

The outdoor festival brought together about 3,000 university graduates from all regions of the country. About 2,000 graduates represented the city of Minsk; and almost 1,000 young people came from the regions. Education Minister Andrei Ivanets addressed the participants with the welcoming remarks.

“This year, more than 43,000 students graduated from higher education institutions in Belarus. Today the festival gathered 3,000 graduates who excelled in studies, sport and public life. This is a very important day for every young person, because by and large their journey to adulthood begins today. Tomorrow they will come to their first job. I am sure that each of you will become a true professional. As the president said, young people will be building our country. This is a very big responsibility that is placed on our youth, but we are absolutely sure that the young people will live up to our hopes. They will show by their creative work that Belarusians are a peace-loving and hard-working nation,” the minister said.

During a ceremony to honor university graduates and faculty members held earlier in the day, the head of state announced plans to thoroughly fine-tune the education system. Commenting on this statement, Andrei Ivanets noted that the education system should train specialists that the country needs. “When it comes to the two-tier training system we mean bachelor’s and master’s programs and it is important to place a clear emphasis. The guys who graduate from universities are trained specialists with degrees. In this regard, the approaches to the master’s program require thorough fine-tuning. The point is that if someone wants to go into science, they should be able to do so after university without having to deal with any additional artificial obstacles. If someone wants to become a university professor then this university should have the right to select the best of its graduates and give them the opportunity to enter their faculty. Those who want to go into science should take a post-graduate program and defend a PhD, and later a doctoral thesis. We are going to have a serious detailed meeting on ways of improving the master’s program in our country. Today, the head of state announced that such a meeting will happen within the next month. We will do everything for the benefit of our country because we are well aware that today is the time to prioritize our national interests. In the face of sanctions, we must honestly and frankly say what our country needs,” he said.

On the site next to the Sports Palace, the ‘music laboratory’ featured MS ADAHOVSKI, DJ ELLAY, DJ BUDDHAUNIQUE and popular singer Shir accompanied by the Feeria show ballet group. The program also included a light show and a dance program.

The outdoor festival was attended by about 3,000 graduates from all regions of the country and also rectors and vice-rectors of Belarusian universities.
