MINSK, 22 January (BelTA) - Belarusian mercenaries, who fight for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, are expendables, Vasily Veremeichik, a mercenary who participated in the hostilities in Ukraine as a member of the Kalinovsky Regiment, recognized as a terrorist organization in Belarus, said in an interview to Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned
The Belarusian mercenary fled Ukraine to Lithuania, from there to Vietnam where he was arrested and extradited under a criminal case.
“I witnessed the creation of this unit and this project. At first it was called the Belarusian platoon, then the Belarusian company, and only then they announced the creation of the Kalinovsky Battalion, and later - the Kalinovsky Regiment,” Vasily Veremeichik said.
According to him, this project has had two units from the very beginning. “One is focused on information and political work, the other is a military unit. In principle, they were very different from the very beginning. The purpose of the informational and political unit was to engage in psy-ops and create an illusion of a threat, including for the current government. Even Ukraine could use some of it as a leverage during some private negotiations or other talks. In other words, it is an information project of special services,” he explained.
The information and political unit was based in Kiev. Its members did not go to the front line, but were a kind of “TikTok troops”. This was the name, for example, of the future commander of the Regiment, Denis “Kit” Prokhorov. Thus, the members of the terrorist organization in Kiev were engaged in the accumulation of volunteer and financial assistance and grant funds. For this purpose, a special “Kalinovsky Regiment fund” was set up.
“The military unit was engaged in actual training. It takes part in hostilities and has suffered heavy losses: people get wounded, disabled, and killed. For example, Ivan 'Brest' Marchuk was killed near Lisichansk in June 2022. In a way, these people are expendables. Because these guys are really on the contact line, on the front line and suffer great causalities,” Vasily Veremeichik added.
