GORKI DISTRICT, 12 October (BelTA) - Peace-loving countries and peoples should stand together. This is what our ancestors fought for, Polish former judge, head of the Prawda Polska Foundation Tomasz Szmydt said at an event to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the Battle of Lenino in Gorki District on 12 October, BelTA has learned.
“We have met today to celebrate the combat brotherhood of Tadeusz Kosciuszko's division and the Red Army,” he said. “This is the place where the joint combat path began: from Lenino to Berlin. Poles, Russians, Belarusians, Ukrainians and many people of other nationalities fought shoulder to shoulder against the German fascists.”
According to Tomasz Szmydt, many soldiers of the Polish Division and the Red Army gave their lives for the Polish nation. “As a result, Poland was liberated. Our nation was saved from annihilation and a new state based on the principles of social justice was created. We must remember that,” he said.
“Belarus cherishes the memory of the heroes of the Red Army, the Great Patriotic War,” he continued. “The Polish government is doing everything to destroy this memory. War monuments are being torn down. History is being falsified. This is a great threat not only for us, but also for the whole world. We, Poles, have a difficult task to counteract this, so that the younger generation does not forget about the Second World War, and the role that the Red Army played in it. They must remember that Poles, along with the people of the Soviet Union, fought and gave their lives for our survival. We must honor their memory, because it is thanks to them that we live in peace today. We must not forget about it.”
Tomasz Szmydt is sure that in the current difficult times people must remember this, despite the hostile propaganda of the West and the United States. “Our place is among the brotherly peoples of Belarus and Russia,” he said. “Together we can create a counterweight to the Anglo-Saxons who want to divide us. It is enough to see what is happening in Ukraine today to realize that no Polish patriot would want such a fate for their country, for Poland. We must do everything to live in harmony and friendship, contrary to the ideas that the Polish government is trying to impose on their people. Peace-loving countries and peoples must stand together - this is what our ancestors fought for.”
