MINSK, 11 November (BelTA) – In a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel, founder of the United Sweden initiative Bo Jonsson reflected on the origins of Russophobia in Sweden.
According to the Swedish politician, there is a negative attitude to both Russia and Belarus at the government level. “My friends like Belarus and I'm not surprised about it. But people I've met online and social media seem to have embraced the image of Belarus that was shaped by the media and the government. Right now, Swedish government openly says that they tried to destabilize Belarus. They even opened some kind of a fake embassy for Belarus with their own fake flag. I'm totally against this. In the past we had a better reputation, now we don't have a reputation anymore,” Bo Jonsson said.
He went on saying that his country should not get involved in destabilizing other states. “They said that it is only because Lukashenko is a close ally of Russia. And Sweden is scared of Russia. It has been scared of it from the time when it lost in Poltava,” he remarked.
According to him, there is a lot of Russophobia in Sweden. They openly discriminate anyone who has a Russian sounding name. “This comes not only from the mainstream media, but also from the government media and also from authorities. I know Russian people in Sweden who had problems with the authorities because of having a Russian sounding name. It's totally crazy. And it has to stop,” the Swedish politician is convinced.
