Sts. Peter and Paul sculptures reinstalled on top of Grodno Farny Church

GRODNO, 12 September (BelTA) – The sculptures of Sts. Peter and Paul have been reinstalled on top St. Francis Xavier (Farny) Cathedral after renovations, BelTA has learned.

The two-meter oak statues have been dried, cleaned, impregnated with special solutions, and repainted. It took specialists from Minsk and Grodno seven months to complete the renovation works.

Rector of the Farny Church Yan Kuchinsky noted that the sculptures are in a perfect condition. St. Paul's sword and St. Peter's key have been gold-plated and the books in their hands have been silver-plated.

Yan Kuchinsky said that it is possible that the sculpture of St. Francis Xavier will also cone under renovations. “The statue needs some polishing but we still do not know how to take it down from the height of 50 meters. Most probably we will have to erect scaffolds to examine it and decide on how to get it down,” he explained.

The exact date when the sculptures were made is unknown. Neither is the name of their creator. The renovation of the interior of the Farny Church continues. The central altar and the altar of St. Archangel Michael have been fully restored after the fire in 2006.

St. Francis Xavier (Farny) Cathedral in Grodno is part of the Jesuit monastery compound. It is an example of Baroque architecture. The foundation stone of the temple was blessed in 1678 and the construction was completed by 1700. The church was consecrated in honor of St. Francis Xavier in presence of King Augustus II and Russian Emperor Peter I on 6 December 1705.
