Straw weaving to be added to Belarus' list of historical and cultural heritage

MINSK, 12 February (BelTA) – Belarusian straw weaving techniques will get the status of historical and cultural heritage of Belarus. The appropriate decision was taken at the session of the Belarusian national scientific methodological council on protection of historical and cultural heritage on 12 February, BelTA learned from the Belarusian Culture Ministry.

The council discussed proposals to include four types of folk art in the national list of historical and cultural heritage. They include Belarusian straw weaving techniques; naive art traditions of Vitebsk Oblast; buckwheat bread baking traditions of Malorita District, Brest Oblast; and technologies and traditions of home-baked bread making of the villages of Zhoravka and Kuzmichy in Luban District, Minsk Oblast.

The council approved the proposals, giving the Culture Ministry the green light to add these types of Belarusian folk art to the national list of historical and cultural heritage of Belarus.

Belarusian straw weaving art techniques stand out among the nominees because they are spread across the whole country. Acquiring the status of the national historical and cultural heritage will be the first step towards their inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Culture Ministry intends to prepare the nomination file and send in to the UNESCO Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020.
