MINSK, 20 April (BelTA) – Women account for 54.6% of senior civil servants in Belarus, Head of the Living Standards Statistics and Household Surveys Department of the National Statistical Committee Inna Konoshonok said at the meeting of the UNECE Group of Experts on Gender Statistics that took place in Geneva, BelTA learned from the press service of the National Statistical Committee.
Gender equality implies equal opportunities for all members of society, regardless of gender. However, gender stereotypes are still widespread in the world, which hinders the achievement of true equality between men and women, the National Statistical Committee remarked. Studying such stereotypes is not only about collecting data. It is highly instrumental in developing measures to eliminate gender inequality. Household surveys are an important source of information about perceptions of gender roles in various fields of life.
“The stereotype that a woman's main role is being a homemaker negatively affects the way women's participation in public or political life is perceived. In fact, 60% of women and almost 80% of men believe that “men are more successful in political or public life than women”. However, today Belarusian women successfully challenge this gender bias, demonstrate leadership potential and actively move up the career ladder to occupy managerial positions. Thus, women account for 70.4% of heads of rural and town executive committees and their deputies, 66% of judges, 54.6% of senior civil servants, 47.7% of local government officials,” said Inna Konoshonok.
