Spending changes of Belarusians analyzed

MINSK, 23 August (BelTA) – Representatives of the National Statistics Committee have told BelTA on what things Belarusians now spend more money.

According to the source, the consumption pattern of Belarusian households has changed considerably. Particularly taking into account an increase in wages. “All economists believe that a decrease in spending on food and an increase in spending on non-foods is a consumption change of the highest quality. In other words, the ability to buy long-term usage items. Over the course of virtually one year the share of food spending dropped from 38.6% in 2023 to 37.4% in 2024. The dietary structure has improved. In terms of consumption by a member of the household the consumption of bakery products dropped by 1kg. The consumption of meat products increased by 2kg. The consumption of fish products, vegetables, and fruits increased by 1kg. It is a very good change of the dietary structure,” the National Statistics Committee noted.

With less money spent on food, Belarusians now buy more non-foods. The change has also had a positive effect on savings of Belarusians. More than 70% of those polled gave a positive answer when asked whether they have savings, the source added.
