MINSK, 13 March (BelTA) - There was indeed a huge number of people wanting to take part in the Restart a Heart first aid project in 2024, when it was held for the first time, because everyone understands that first aid skills can be useful in everyday life, The project organizers told the media, BelTA has learned.

Belarus’ First Deputy Healthcare Minister Yelena Bogdan noted that every day someone encounters a situation where pre-medical assistance is necessary. She cited a recent example where two young men, who possessed CPR skills, saved a man’s life.

The Restart a Heart project allows people to acquire those very skills. Tenth-graders will be taught basic first aid skills - not only cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but also bleeding control and immobilization for injuries.

“How many injuries do we see on the streets, especially during icy conditions or when people are tubing? And how many traffic accidents? We could be the first to arrive at the scene of an accident. And we must understand that our actions should follow this algorithm: call for help and rush to provide assistance,” said Yelena Bogdan.

According to her, the project for tenth-graders will help teach young people not to be afraid to take that first step. Thanks to the knowledge and skills gained, students who complete the project will have no fear or panic in the future; they will know clearly what needs to be done.

Yuri Slobodin, Deputy Chief Physician for Surgery at the National Clinical Medical Center of the Belarus President Property Management Directorate, added that two years ago, when the project was first held, there were many applicants. But not a single simulation center refused to accept more participants than planned. “There were even teachers who came. Because everyone understands why this is necessary,” he said.

Yelena Bogdan added that first aid issues are planned to be worked out in detail in the upcoming Healthcare Code. “This is to put both this campaign and other educational activities for citizens on a more systematic footing," she explained.
