MINSK, 6 December (BelTA) – The signature collection for persons seeking nomination as presidential candidates is ending on 6 December, BelTA has learned.
Pickets to collect signatures have been held across the country since 7 November. The persons seeking nomination include the incumbent President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko, Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus Oleg Gaidukevich, Chairman of the Republican Party of Labor and Justice Aleksandr Khizhnyak, individual entrepreneur Anna Kanopatskaya, and First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus Sergei Syrankov.
Initiative groups must collect at least 100,000 valid signatures. These signatures should be made in person and should be dated. People have the right to support the nomination of several candidates, but they can put only one signature in support of the same candidate.
Signature sheets must be submitted to the relevant district, city (in cities of regional subordination, except for cities with district divisions), city district commissions no later than 6 December 2024. Thus, today is the final day for submitting signature sheets. Within ten days, the authenticity of voters' signatures submitted by the coordinators of the initiative groups will be checked. If the number of invalid signatures exceeds 15% of examined signatures (at least 20% are initially selected), another 15% of voters' signatures from the signature sheets will be checked. If the total number of invalid signatures is more than 15% of examined signatures, all signatures of voters submitted to the relevant territorial commission are considered invalid.
From 7 December through 21 December, a person nominated as a presidential candidate must submit to the Central Election Commission the documents required for registration as a presidential candidate.
The registration will be running from 22 December through 31 December 2024 inclusive (starts 35 days and ends 25 days before the election).
The election campaigning will be running on 1-25 January 2025.
The presidential election is scheduled for 26 January 2025.
