MOSCOW, 10 December (BelTA) – The CSTO is the pillar of Eurasian security, the organization is taking on new tasks and working through all possible development scenarios, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko told journalists reviewing the results of the joint meeting of the CSTO PA Council and the 17th plenary session of the CSTO PA that was held in Moscow on 9 December, BelTA has learned.
“The main purpose of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly is to create a legal framework for the organization. This mostly includes drafting model laws and recommendations with an ultimate goal of converging and harmonizing national legislations,” Igor Sergeyenko said.
According to him, three blocks of model laws and practical recommendations were discussed at the meeting. “The first one concerns information security and fight against crime in the military sphere. The second one deals with combating illegal migration and developing a migration security concept. The third block is dedicated to the development of practical recommendations to challenge massive Western propaganda that seeks to belittle the role of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War and distort the historical truth.”
The chairman of the House of Representatives informed that Belarus develops two blocks under consideration. For example, the draft documents concerning illegal migration were authored by the staff of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus. The fight against memory-holing was taken up by the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research.
In turn, Belarus has embraced a number of new ideas developed by the CSTO PA. Thus, Belarus’ National Security Concept has a section on electoral sovereignty. “This is important, especially today, when election campaigns are becoming an instrument of destabilization in any country in the world,” Igor Sergeyenko noted.
“In addition, two statements were adopted at the meeting: one of them concerns the situation in the Middle East, the second is an address to CSTO member states and parliamentarians of other countries dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War and the anti-Hitler coalition in World War II,” the speaker of the House of Representatives noted.
“All in all, over several years of work, the CSTO PA has adopted dozens of model laws and recommendations that are used in practical activities. In addition, there is an active exchange of opinions on the current situation, a kind of parliamentary monitoring of the military and political situation,” Igor Sergeyenko added.
