MINSK, 6 May (BelTA) - The memory of the sacred feat of the Soviet people, who brought the victory in the Great Patriotic War, is in our DNA. Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko emphasized the importance of defending the truth as he spoke at the scientific forum “The Great Victory for Peace and Development” on 6 May, BelTA has learned.

It was stressed that it was the Soviet people, who bore all the burdens of the Great Patriotic War on their shoulders and achieved the Great Victory 80 years ago. Soldiers, partisans, underground fighters, home front workers, united by the “All for the Front! All for Victory” slogan, at the cost of incredible efforts and millions of sacrificed lives, freed the world from Nazism, ensured the opportunity to live and work, to build one’s statehood.

“The memory of the sacred feat is in the DNA of Belarusians, in our blood, it is part of our national idea and part of the family biography of each of the descendants of the three million Belarusians who died at the frontlines, who were brutally tortured or burned by Nazi criminals and their accomplices,” Igor Sergeyenko said.

During the Great Patriotic War, the BSSR lost more than half of the national wealth. It is a historical fact, but decades pass, generations change and, as the speaker noted, there are those who would like to rewrite the truth to their own liking.

“Some in the West, who are obsessed with revanchist sentiments, would like us to forget about the Victory, about the crimes that were committed on our land, about the threat that the ideology of fascism poses to the world. It is our direct responsibility to prevent this,” the speaker of the House of Representatives stressed. “We will do everything to ensure that the memory of the Great Victory, the truth about the genocide of the Belarusian people remains part of the genetic code of the nation, the people's unity and cohesion.”

Igor Sergeyenko recalled the accents set by the head of state during the recent international patriotic forum of the Union State of Belarus and Russia “Great heritage - common future” in the Russian city of Volgograd about the fight for historical truth, when history is addressed not only to protect the future, but also the present.

“We are heirs of the great generation of winners. This status demands a great responsibility from us,” the speaker said. “Today, a broad information war has been launched against us, primarily for the minds of young people, as a preliminary phase of a hot war. This is another aspect of both our today's conference and the work that must be actively continued in the coming years.”

On 6-7 May, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is hosting an international conference “The Great Victory in the Name of Peace and Development” marking the 80th anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. The international forum has united historians from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kursk, Smolensk, Tambov and Tula regions, Republic of Tatarstan, Chuvashia and the Chechen Republic, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Belarusian historical science is represented at the conference by scholars from 55 Belarusian and 18 foreign organizations, including academic institutes, higher educational institutions, museums, archives, libraries, and schools.
