Sergeyenko: CSTO countries show unity in preserving historical memory

MINSK, 3 June (BelTA) - The CSTO countries demonstrate unity in their aim to preserve historical memory, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko said at the meeting of the Council of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly in Almaty, Kazakhstan on 3 June, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.

“The year 2024 is an important year for our country - we are celebrating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi invaders. All our peoples are proud of the common Victory in that cruel war, which claimed millions of people’s lives. Our fathers and grandfathers, representatives of all nationalities of the once united country, made a decisive contribution to the victory over fascism, bore on their shoulders the brunt of the war for freedom and the right to life. Today's flower ceremony at the Eternal Flame in the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen Park demonstrates our unity in the aim to preserve historical memory, to prevent the revival of fascism in any of its manifestations,” Igor Sergeyenko said. He also invited the participants of the CSTO PA Council meeting to take part in the celebrations dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus in Minsk on 3 July.

The Council considered the implementation of decisions of the November 2023 session of the CSTO Collective Security Council and measures taken to counter challenges and threats to collective security. The CSTO PA Council adopted a statement in connection with the development of artificial intelligence technologies. Besides, information was heard on the results of participation of the CSTO PA representatives in the international observation of elections and referendums in Belarus, Russia, Serbia, as well as in the work of the 148th IPU Assembly and the regular 23rd winter session of the OSCE PA.

When considering the issue of international observation of the parliamentary elections in Belarus, Igor Sergeyenko thanked the international observers from the CSTO PA for the great work and the high assessment they gave to the organization of the election campaign in our country. “It was a very responsible period for us,” he said. “After all, for the first time parliamentary elections in Belarus were held after the amendments and additions to the Constitution and the Electoral Code of the Republic of Belarus. It is gratifying that the high assessment of the group of international observers of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly was based solely on their own observation, as well as official information and factual material provided by election commissions. We tried to take into account the experience of previous election campaigns and use the recommendations developed, including by the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly, on improving electoral processes. I am convinced that our joint work in this area will continue,” the speaker added.
