MINSK, 17 September (BelTA) – Nobody will be allowed to erase our historical memory and make Belarusians hostage to alien geopolitical interests, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko said at a sitting of the second session of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus of the eighth convocation on 17 September, BelTA has learned.
“Today, on the Day of People’s Unity, we are opening the second session of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus of the eighth convocation. This is both symbolic and responsible. After all, it is you and I who are the voice of the people, representatives of all regions of the country. It is we who should participate in the further consolidation of society, ensure quality development of legislation in its interests,” Igor Sergeyenko said.
The Day of People’s Unity teaches us to be attentive to our history, to find in the past the answers to pressing issues of the present and jointly build our future, the speaker said.
“The reunification of the Belarusian lands and the restoration of the nation's ties of kinship have always been and remain in the minds of many generations of our citizens an act of historical justice. Understanding the unity of the nation as an unconditional value helped the Belarusians to withstand the Great Patriotic War, to revive the country from ruins, to develop a powerful national economic complex, which became the basis for shaping the image of modern Belarus,” the chairman of the House of Representatives said. “The whole 30-year path of the sovereign development of the state is the path of peace and creation. Our greatest values are unity, patriotism and devotion to the Motherland. This holiday is a worthy response to our enemies. We regard interference in internal affairs, attempts to destabilize the situation in the country as revanchism and a real threat to national security.”
“We have learned the lessons of history. We will not allow anybody to divide us again, erase the historical memory, make Belarus and Belarusians hostage to geopolitical interests alien to us.”
“We will retain our sovereignty, the right to independently determine domestic and foreign policy, choose friends and allies. This is what we, MPs, will be guided by in our parliamentary work,” Igor Sergeyenko added.
