Sergeyenko: Belarus’ initiatives are aimed at building confidence, fruitful cooperation

MINSK, 31 July (BelTA) - Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Igor Sergeyenko met with Mouhamed Khouraichi Niass, Secretary General of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States, in Tehran on 31 July, BelTA learned from the press service of the House of Representatives.

Belarus has been consistently pursuing unifying initiatives aimed at building confidence and fruitful cooperation, the speaker of the House of Representatives said. He emphasized that the most important initiative on global dialogue for the formation of a new and comprehensive system of collective security belongs to the president of the Republic of Belarus, pointing out the importance of joint development of the Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity in the 21st century initiated by Belarus.

The parties praised similar approaches to the foreign policy of the OIC member states and Belarus, which are based on the principles of mutually beneficial cooperation while respecting national traditions. In this respect, Igor Sergeyenko emphasized that the Belarusian MPs appreciate the balanced, objective position that the MPs of the OIC member states (this is the voice of almost 2 billion people) take in the international arena, particularly in the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Igor Sergeyenko confirmed Belarus’ interest in developing contacts with the OIC member states, including in trade, industry and agriculture. The parties also expressed interest in strengthening ties between the OIC Parliamentary Union and the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation is an international organization of Islamic countries founded on 25 September 1969 as the Organization of the Islamic Conference. It was renamed the Organization of Islamic Cooperation by the decision of the 38th session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers held in Astana on 28 June 2011. At present, the OIC comprises 57 countries. The goals of the OIC are to strengthen cooperation among Muslim states in economic, social, cultural, scientific and other areas, to eliminate racial discrimination, to maintain international security, to support the struggle of Muslim peoples in defense of their dignity and independence, and to create favorable conditions for the education of young people.
