Serbian expert: The West sees Belarus only as a trophy, a source of resources

MINSK, 24 January (BelTA) - The West looks at Belarus only as a trophy and a source of resources, Stevan Gajic, Doctor of Political Science, researcher at the Institute of European Studies (Serbia) and visiting professor at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.

“The West looks at Belarus only as a trophy, a source of resources - territorial, material, human ones. This is what happened to the whole of Europe after the collapse of the bipolar system. We were once under the Ottoman yoke. Do you know what that was like? The most promising young people were taken into the Janissaries and made the worst enemies of their own people,” Stevan Gajic said.

According to the political scientist, this is exactly what happened after the collapse of the bipolar world in the countries of Eastern Europe - regardless of whether they were in the European Union or not. “The center of world capitalism, of course, became the United States, and the center of European capitalism became Germany. In fact, this system collapsed in 2008 with the onset of the economic crisis. Maybe even in 2007, after Putin's Munich speech. After that, an open confrontation began, one could say a war, which had different stages,” he emphasized.

Among the stages of this confrontation Stevan Gajic singled out the bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, the war in Georgia in 2008 and the coup d'état in Ukraine in 2013-2014. “Belarus believed that Minsk could be the center of negotiations, but the West did not see Belarus as a neutral country,” the political scientist said.
