Senator: Belarus would like to see peace and stability in Kyrgyzstan

MINSK, 8 October (BelTA) - Belarus would like to see peace and stability to return to Kyrgyzstan, which is an important partner of Belarus in the Eurasian Economic Union and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of the Republic Sergei Rachkov told BelTA as he commented on the situation in Kyrgyzstan after the parliamentary elections.

“Belarus would like to see peace and stability to return to Kyrgyzstan, which is an important partner of our country in the Eurasian Economic Union and the CSTO,” Sergei Rachkov said. “Recent events in Bishkek show how difficult the process of establishing an independent sovereign state is and how strong it must be to withstand external and internal destructive influences.”

The senator wondered what lessons Belarus can already learn from the situation in Kyrgyzstan where an unconstitutional seizure of power is happening, where protests turn into looting and seizure of property, where impostors appoint themselves to senior government positions, where the financial system has stopped functioning while foreign non-governmental organizations sponsor anti-state actions?

“Our country has done much over the last quarter of a century and has achieved a lot in state construction. However, this process is far from complete due to the serious external and domestic political challenges and threats. This calls for revitalization of institutions of governance, security and defense and simultaneous development of the political system in our country,” the senator said. “In designing possible improvements and changes, we should not allow a repetition of a "perestroika syndrome" when, hasty, ill-conceived decisions were made under the guise of beautiful political slogans, which led to the destruction of a strong state and a protracted crisis in the post-Soviet space.”

It is important to take measures to improve the laws governing the social and political life of Belarusian society, taking into account the current trends and political activity of citizens and involvement of participants expressing the interests of foreign actors, including foreign non-governmental organizations, in the political processes. “For example, we can make use of certain elements of the legislative practices of a number of Western and post-Soviet countries," the senator added. "It is imperative that people with alternative views who applaud the Kyrgyz revolutionaries understand the consequences of the situation in Kyrgyzstan, which we have avoided thanks to the political will of the head of state, the professional actions of the law enforcement agencies and the support of the majority of the Belarusian people,” Sergei Rachkov said.
