Russian university rector: Belarusians got consolidated after attempts to destroy the country in 2020

MINSK, 7 April (BelTA) – The Belarusian society got consolidated after attempts to destroy the country in 2020. Rector of the St. Petersburg University of the Humanities and Social Sciences Alexander Zapesotsky made the relevant statement in a new episode of BelTA’s YouTube project V Teme [On Point].
Alexander Zapesotsky drew attention to the role various individuals play in the history of countries and mentioned Mikhail Gorbachev as an example. It was during his rule that the Soviet Union collapsed. “Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev destroyed a truly great country. The Soviet Union could have kept its position and could have substantially surpassed China and the United States of America. It was home to remarkable, educated, kind people with the right values and a true cult of knowledge,” he said.

Nevertheless, the rector noted, the huge country was destroyed by this short-sighted politician Mikhail Gorbachev had become. “I mean we have to support and take care of our leaders,” he stressed.

Alexander Zapesotsky added that it is very easy to criticize the authorities and find various faults with them: “It is easy to say that the government should have done this or that. But at the same time every one of us has to think about what they have done for their country. The authorities should do their job and we should do ours.”

He also noted that after attempts to destroy the country in 2020 the Belarusian society got consolidated around a national leader. This is why the West failed to do in Belarus what it had managed to do in Ukraine.
