Russian regions show interest in small towns congresses with Belarus

GRODNO, 12 August (BelTA) - Russian regions are showing growing interest in establishing small towns congresses modeled after the successful partnership between Belarus’ Grodno Oblast and Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Yevgeny Lyulin, Chairman of the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Legislative Assembly, shared this observation with journalists following meetings with Grodno Oblast authorities, BelTA has learned.

When asked about expectations for the upcoming fourth joint congress, Yevgeny Lyulin noted: “These regular gatherings have fostered deeper connections between our communities: municipalities befriend each other, agricultural enterprises establish partnerships, and utility services and cultural departments exchange expertise. Our expectations remain highly positive.”

The official emphasized that each congress yields tangible economic results through signed agreements and treaties. Yevgeny Lyulin emphasized that some crucial elements of partnership transcend formal agreements: “There are things you can't put on paper - the genuine willingness to work together and implement joint programs. The growing fraternal bonds between our people help us successfully execute all kinds of economic, social, cultural and educational projects in practice.”

“The significance of this is undeniable. The fact that small towns congresses have attracted interest from all Russian regions demonstrates that our experience will be replicated across other parts of Russia and Belarus,” Yevgeny Lyulin said.

Yevgeny Lyulin reported consistent annual growth in trade between Nizhny Novgorod and Belarus: “Our bilateral trade has increased approximately 7-8 times over 15 years. For Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, a major economic area, Belarus now ranks as our third largest trade partner after China and India,” he stated.

The 4th Congress of Small Towns of Grodno Oblast and Nizhny Novgorod Oblast is underway on 12-15 August, with events scheduled across multiple districts. The concluding ceremonies, including the signing of new interregional cooperation agreements, will take place in Mosty.
