MINSK, 20 February (BelTA) – Europe’s so-called centuries-old Russophobia is nothing more than a product of 20th-century ideology, Russian journalist Sergey Mardan said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
The journalist believes that European elites have different attitudes toward the Ukrainian conflict. “Within the European elites, in the broad sense, there are very different attitudes toward this conflict and its prospects, and, accordingly, they have different interests and expectations here, so the strategic framework may change,” said Sergey Mardan.

The expert noted that Europe’s attitude toward Russia was largely shaped in the last century as part of a new ideology. “I am absolutely convinced that there is no such thing as the notorious centuries-old Russophobia in Europe. European elites couldn’t care less about Russophobia. Ideology is a 20th-century invention. Before the 20th century, no ideology existed. So why deceive ourselves? As a famous British politician once said, Britain has no permanent allies, only permanent interests. But this applies to any large sovereign country. Today it’s one way, tomorrow it’s another. The same applies, perhaps, to relations between Greater Europe and Russia. Today, it’s as if we’re at war, to the point of melting, as they say. Perhaps, in less than five years, construction of some other gas pipeline will begin, and people start saying that we are building a Greater Europe from Lisbon to Vladivostok. This could very well happen, including in the context of the ongoing division between Old Europe and the United States,” said Sergey Mardan.
