MINSK, 5 May (BelTA) - The Victory Banner is the embodiment of the unparalleled feat of the liberators,Russian Ambassador to Belarus Boris Gryzlov said at a ceremony of raising the Victory Banner at the Russian Embassy in Minsk, BelTA learned.
The Ambassador emphasized that this scarlet flag is not just a unique historical object. It also has a special legal status, which is enshrined by the federal law in the Russian Federation.
“This banner is a state relic of Russia and the official symbol of the victory of the Soviet people over Nazi Germany. It is the embodiment of the unparalleled feat of the soldiers-liberators, the core of our common historical memory, carefully passed down from generation to generation. No one in the world has a more fundamental and profound symbol than the Victory Banner, which epitomizes the sacrificial heroism, triumph of will and unyielding spirit of the multinational Soviet people,” Ambassador Boris Gryzlov emphasized.

Along with the heroism of the regular units of the Red Army, he emphasized the contribution of the large-scale partisan movement to the fight against fascism and the achievement of Victory.

Ambassador Boris Gryzlov also noted the assistance provided to Soviet soldiers by allies in the anti-Hitler coalition. “It was a significant help in the fight against the enemy. However, we cannot ignore the historical fact that the opening of the second front and the landing in Normandy in June 1944 took place only after the Red Army, having defended Stalingrad, achieved a fundamental turning point in the war and finally seized the strategic initiative. Allied units did not set foot on French soil until it became clear that the Soviet victory was inevitable. The question was not whether our soldiers could reach Berlin, it’s just that the United States and Great Britain could not allow our undivided triumph,” the ambassador said.
