Russia Today chief describes interview with Lukashenko as sincere, personal

MINSK, 8 September (BelTA) – The interview with Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko was exceedingly sincere. Margarita Simonyan, Editor-in-Chief of the international TV company Russia Today, Editor-in-Chief of the international media company Rossiya Segodnya, Editor-in-Chief of the news agency Sputnik, made the statement after representatives of leading Russian mass media interviewed Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 8 September, BelTA has learned.

Margarita Simonyan stressed that today's situation in Belarus, which had been calm and stable up till now, is interesting not only for Russian reporters but the entire world. She pointed out that Aleksandr Lukashenko had given sincere answers to the questions the mass media representatives had asked. “We understand better now what is going on in the soul of your president,” she noted. “He spoke some really intimate and personal things.” Margarita Simonyan stressed that it was very important for the Russian journalists to understand Aleksandr Lukashenko.

Speaking about events going on in Belarus, Margarita Simonyan said: “It seems obvious to us that this upsurge in Belarus has failed, thank god. On the one hand, a color revolution has failed although the situation was close. On the other hand, the suddenly raging masses are now just simmering. The fact cannot be disregarded now.”

“It will be impossible to live like you used to. You have to take into account what has happened and work with it,” Margarita Simonyan said. “Work primarily with external threats, work on information security of your country, work with young Belarusians, explain things to them, they have not been scared, they have nothing to compare things with. It is true for Belarus and for Russia.”
