MINSK, 12 May (BelTA) – Belarus is interested in peaceful coexistence with neighbors because it is an essential condition for a decent life of neighboring nations. Chairman of the Belarusian political party Belaya Rus Oleg Romanov made the statement at a meeting with the former Lithuanian presidential candidate Eduardas Vaitkus, BelTA has learned.
Oleg Romanov said: “Your ideas are very close to our country and the policy it pursues. The Republic of Belarus has always been in favor of genuine sovereignty and the absence of foreigners lording over the people of Belarus or over the people of Lithuania. It is the nation that has to express its will in the course of genuinely democratic procedures. No attempts are even being made to hide the games that are rather rampant in the West right now. I am referring to all kinds of machinations during elections.”
The politician remarked that Belarus’ stance is focused on the idea that the nation should be the master of its country instead of some external forces. Oleg Romanov added that Belarusians support Eduardas Vaitkus’ stance on international relations.
“Due to historical reasons we are neighbors. Our president often talks about it as well. Many nations have sayings about relations between neighbors. Essentially neighbors can be closer than relatives due to vagaries of fate. This is why peaceful coexistence is an essential condition for a decent life of neighboring nations,” he stressed. “This is why Belarus is interested in getting Lithuania as well as our other neighbors (Poland, Latvia) to pursue a peaceful policy. Belarus would like them to be countries one can constructively interact with.”
Nevertheless, Oleg Romanov stated that Poland and the Baltic states do not always make constructive statements. “The situation is worse in Poland in comparison to Lithuania. Military contingents are being deployed in Poland. Our military view these actions as clearly unfriendly. But we believe that countries located in the same region need peaceful coexistence,” the chairman of the Belaya Rus Party added.
