
VOLGOGRAD, 29 April (BelTA) – Over 500 participants from 20 countries came to the Russian city of Volgograd to participate in the international forum of the Union State of Belarus and Russia “Great heritage - common future”, BelTA has learned.
The forum takes place ahead of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory and is meant to preserve and defend the historic memory about events of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. Taking part in the forum are over 500 people from 20 countries, including friendly countries of Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The Belarusian parliament delegation is led by Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, First Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia Igor Sergeyenko.
Two panel sessions were held on the first day of the forum. They focused on “Preserving and protecting the common historical memory” and on “The patriotic upbringing on the basis of historical knowledge”. A plenary session of the international forum will take place today.
Igor Sergeyenko told reporters: “We have to once again revisit the greatness of the heroic feat of the Soviet nation during the Great Patriotic War and use the example of the Battle of Stalingrad to demonstrate this greatness. Secondly, we have to once again remind [everyone] that memory should be preserved. We will not allow the truth of the past years to be distorted.”
The speaker of the lower chamber of the Belarusian parliament underlined that the international forum of the Union State of Belarus and Russia “Great heritage - common future” represents a powerful platform. “I am convinced that every delegation will make its own contribution by telling us how history is taught at higher education institutions and what events are organized. We will also hear about pages of history of various countries and nations during the terrible years of the Great Patriotic War,” the MP stressed.
The forum’s organization was initiated by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia and approved by the Supreme State Council of the Union State of Belarus and Russia.
Opinions of the forum’s participants will be reflected in a statement by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia on matters of protecting the historical truth, on preserving the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. The statement is supposed to be passed by the 68th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, which is due to take place in the hero city of Brest in June.
