MINSK, 16 January (BelTA) – The latest episode of the documentary series Time Chose Us by the Belarus 1 TV channel explored the reasons why Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko reshuffled the government in 2018.
Orsha of 2018 became an illustrative example of how patience sometimes comes to an end. The scheduled visits of the president are mostly known in advance. Besides, everyone could already get used to the fact that Aleksandr Lukashenko often deviates from the route proposed by the host. At a meeting in Orsha on 14 August 2018, the president pointed out to systemic failures in the development of the district and in this regard made a number of personnel decisions.
Deputy Prime Minister (2012-2019), Chairman of the Standing Committee for Regional Policy and Local Self-Government of the Council of the Republic Mikhail Rusy noted that, by the example of Orsha District, the head of state instructed the government and economic institutions to develop approaches to accelerated development of large regions.
“As far as I remember, we had come up with 126 major projects. Two years passed and half of them was not fulfilled. How was the president supposed to react? Of course, the president pulled no punches,” Mikhail Rusy remarked.
“We embarked on a certain course in accordance with the Constitution of the country. The president announces this course in his election program, and this course is an important factor in voters' decision-making at polling stations. No one is allowed to deceive people. I will not name names, but in our government it was like this: announce one course, but pursue a different one. Well, other countries do this. Yet, I have never done this and will never do this. We should pursue the course that we pledged (and the government was put together precisely for this course). People are at the heart of our policy. This is not populism, I have always insisted on this. Otherwise, we have nothing to do in this country. People are of paramount importance,” the president emphasized while making personnel decisions on 18 August 2018.
