Radiation levels in Belarusian forests decrease

MINSK, 26 April (BelTA) - The Bellesozashchita state institution affiliated with the Belarusian Forestry Ministry published information about improvements in the radiation situation in the Belarusian forests, BelTA has learned.

In 2024, the area of radioactive contamination in forests in the remit of the Forestry Ministry decreased by 18,100 hectares. The radiation monitoring service, which includes 35 accredited units, oversees radioactive contamination control in the Belarusian forests.
The radiation situation is updated annually, classifying forest areas into zones of radioactive contamination. Currently, the contaminated area of the forests in Belarus totals 1.2 million hectares.

"Due to the Chernobyl disaster, every fourth forest fell into a contaminated zone. After almost forty years, the levels and areas of radioactive contamination have significantly decreased due to the natural decay of radioactive substances. In 1995, the share of contaminated forests managed by the Forestry Ministry was 25.6%, while in 2024, it amounted to 13.9%," Bellesozashchita noted.
